Trombone, guitar, and an upright bass. Often, with only a duet, the walking bass line is implied. It’s not the same as having the real thing and the tonality of the lower pitched strings of a bass rounds out the full range of sound for an ensemble. Additionally, a third player allows for the guitarist or bassist to solo without a loss of accompaniment. And frankly, an upright bass is visually very appealing and cool.
